I saw that the Avalanche Peak Challenge is being run on Saturday 6 March this year.
This 25 km alpine mountain run starts at Arthurs Pass village, 150 km west of Christchurch, and climbs steeply 1100 metres over the summit of Avalanche Peak, then down a rock-slide into the deep canyon of the Crow valley and finishes with a long run out to the Bealey Tavern on SH73. I've tramped over the route many times. In 2005 and 2006 I helped out as a route marshall on the run. It was a great experience both times:
